"Show! Don't Tell!" - May be the best Rush song between Signals and "Driven" from Test For Echo. The rest of the album is okay. I'm also fond of "Scars" and "Red Tide." Still, it's an underrated album. I like it, but it's not a Rush classic by any means. But "Show Don't Tell"! Man what a song!::cool:

I like Presto. "Show Don't Tell" is okay, but "The Pass", "Presto", "Hand Over Fist" and "Available Light" are all among my favorite Rush tracks. In a sense, Presto best illustrates Rush's songwriting approach of jamming melodies together, sometimes well and sometimes awkwardly. Ultimately. I was disappointed that they discarded the semi-acoustic sound some songs on Presto have, which I think would have been a more interesting direction than the one they took in the 90s.

(I think Roll the Bones was half of a good album, Counterparts was sort of like all the worst parts of Presto done over again, and Test For Echo was, well, the less said, the better. I think it will be the last Rush album I own, as I haven't been able to work up any enthusiasm for buying Vapor Trails.)

Best Rush track? For my money, it's "The Big Money". But you can practically throw darts at Hold Your Fire's song list for second-best.

From one who has all of the records....
 

Ask 10 people who mostly like later Rush what they're favorite songs are, you'll get 10 different answers. Ask 10 older Rush fans, and they all agree for the most part.

I can't believe it. Someone besides me likes "Hand Over Fist." During my extensive Presto bashing research, I discovered that "Hand Over Fist" is the most derided song on the album. It is also my favorite. I salute you, Michael Rawdon, for your excellent taste in music.

There's nothing wrong with that song. Again, less than perfect Rush is still great.

Personally, I deride Anagram. Now that's a crappy tune!

Amazing. I think they just got better and better from Presto to Vapor Trails! Exactly the opposite from your assessment. :eek:

Excellent! My first step on the way to total prog-world domination! :D

I'm a sucker for prog which mixes in acoustic guitar. There's a point in The Flower Kings' full-disk set "Garden of Dreams" on Flower Power which suddenly shifts from the full-electric sound to being driven by an acoustic guitar. My favorite part of the disk. It's why I like "Presto" and "Hand Over Fist", too.

FWIW, I think I'd say that "War Paint" and "Red Tide" are my least-favorite tracks on Presto. It's a rather uneven album.

Well you know, if we all agreed on everything, the world would be a pretty boring place, yes? :)

I was once talking with a friend who is a much bigger Rush fan than I, and he was talking about Rush's worst albums and I was talking about their best and at almost the exact same instant we both said: "...Hold Your Fire."

So it just goes to show you.

The fact she likes hard rock and heavy metal makes her an anomaly I guess. We have seen many concerts together, most recently Yes. However, she is quite intolerant of most prog, so I don't argue too much anymore. Her husband is very intolerant of prog. I've seen Queensryche and Peter Murphy with him, however.

Shipping her across the pond would have been good, I would have liked to visit. But you're three years too late.:cool:

I guess now that I have been named I have to add to this discussion.

I was not too fond of Presto when it came out. I didn't like the sound (I think Geddy was playing that hateful Steinberger bass. Sounds like a farting guitar). I also did not, and still don't, like their prog-pop forays. I am more of the old school Rush fan preferring their epics and instrumentals over the more concise musical and lyrical statements that they currently do. Having said that, Vapour Trails is my favourite CD since Signals I think primarily because they have gone away from prog-pop and more toward hard rock with a rich textural sound and the most interesting bass lines that I have heard in a long time from them.

I would have preferred that Counterparts was added instead of Presto but my complaints, regarding AM, are few and far between.

Now back to my lurking.
