This brings up an interesting point actually. How willing are you guys to put up with "world music" vs. "prog"?

Many of the interesting artists from less known parts of the world would qualify as the former but not the latter.

If I did a show that was more world music oriented would people get annoyed?

My instinct is to try to avoid doing a world music show (but maybe letting a track slip in now and again) because it's not what people tune in to Aural Moon for. But if the assembled throng wills it, I could adjust that attitude.

since I'm a (very) part-time listener to the Moon these days.

But I don't see the problem, especially since we can hear a lot of what's on the Moon from our own collections. Also, a lot of same bands are played.

Some of what's played on the programming is not prog, really. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I listen to The Moon nearly everyday and love what I hear......mostly (Right Spaz :D )

One of the best things about it is the fact that my ear is drawn to music that I wouldn't normally hear.

I'd go along with the odd bit of world music being thrown in. No problem.

That all depends on how much and how far away one strays from prog. I'm not saying that one or two songs in the World Music genre would hurt, but I'm not sure that an entire show would work for me.

I'd say go with your gut instict. I certainly wouldn't mind a track here and there, but I'd personally be leery of an entire show based on "World Music".

To be honest, I'm surprised there's not a lot of world music in your show already! When PShores began, I thought we'd hear a mix of prog from that country along with world from that country. I say play it. Play that mix.

You may want to look into music that sometimes gets called "world fusion." Basically it's world-prog. What this genre entails is basically that an artist from a particular area incorcorates their native music into a rock/pop/electronica structure. Some examples are Adiemus, Sacred Spirits, and Afro-Celt Sound System.

As for the "world music vs. prog" thing, I personally have always considered "world" a subgenre of prog. Now, not pure world, like recordings of African chant. But as soon as you take African chant and add keyboards or acoustic guitar, I think you step firmly into the prog/world-fusion realm. Prog began when artists took jazz and classical and merged them with rock. I think that it's the same exact thing when someone melds world with rock - at least as a sub-genre.



Hrrrm... the next BrainRock I make will have minimum of six world-fusion pieces in it...!
