Music Suggestions

I would really, really like to get as many music suggestions for "The Planetarium" as possible. We've put the word out, and we hope you'll do the same, to gather as many submissions as possible for the show. Think of music you've heard in the syndicated programs "Hearts of Space", "Echoes", and "Musical Starstreams" and you're headed in the right direction

What artists would you recommend for the show?

Nice Man 10-25-2004 07:58 PM

hmmmmm

I can't quite tell what kinda genre/s your going for BUT

I reckon some Brian Eno and Sigur Ros would fit the discription you gave in the other thread

Avian 10-25-2004 08:00 PM

Thanks! You're on the right track - ambient, space music, "new age" (I hate that term), and the like.

Nice Man 10-25-2004 08:01 PM

UPDATE: Cool - it'd be nice to hear that sorta music on here.... Yeah 'new age' is such a generic yet limiting term for a musical genre...

roger 10-25-2004 08:07 PM

how about some Oregon?

Yesspaz 10-25-2004 08:09 PM

Off the top of my head...

I. Um, try a lot of the spacier side of Tarentel. You can check out such tracks from the library as:

Fear of Bridges 1-6
Welcome
Tarentel 1
The Waltz
Adonai
Popol Vuh

II. There's a band called "Stars of the Lid" that'd be good. go to http://epitonic.com and search them out (free mp3s). At that same site check out "A Small Good Thing" and "Labradford."

III. Definitley not Blink 182.

IV. A lot of Mike Oldfield's output could fit this genre. I'm specifically thinking of "The Songs of Distant Earth" and "Tres Lunas."

That's off the top of my head... I'll drop more if I think of it.

Yesspaz 10-25-2004 08:10 PM

Oh, and...

Oh, and some of the driftier type Krautrock, such as latter-day Tangerine Dream and such.

Rick and Roll 10-25-2004 09:39 PM

a fish out of water here....

but "My Life In The Bush of Ghosts" (Byrne and Eno) is kinda cool.

KeithieW 10-26-2004 02:26 AM

Some good news on the moon.

Avian,

Great that your show is to air soon. I know it's something you've been wanting to do for a while and I'm really glad it's come to fruition. I will definitely be tuning in.

A band/track that might do the biz is "Angel Earth"'s track 'Circle of love'.

Also, Rick Wakeman's "Zodiaque" album might fit the bill.

Good luck!!!!!!

A perfect track for your show would be Tangerine Dream's "Remote Viewing" off of the Exit album.

VAXman 10-26-2004 12:45 PM

no really "ambient" but...

That's funny since I was about to put this trasck into the first show. I decided on another TD track tho... tune in to find out which!

Cool. I'll look for it on some future show.

Try some of the TD progeny too. For example, Klaus Schultze's "Searching" is rather ambient.

Avain I suggest you dig more of The third and the Mortal, which I see is Norwegian

Look at http://mortal.info/ with demos

Off the top of my head...

Avian,

The sad fact is that your airtime coincides with my T'ai Chi class... :(
I'm very bummed, as I would like to hear the show... Nonetheless, here are a few artists to look into:

From the AM catalog:
Deuter

Patrick O'Hearn

3rd and the Mortal-Axure

Happy the Man-The Moon, I Sing (Nossuri)

Camel- Landscapes from Nude, and (I think there's a dreamy tune to be found on Raindances, and Breathless)

Outside the catalog:

Mark Isham - Early stuff (esp. Vapor Drawings) Also a song called "My Wife with Champagne Shoulders"

Steve Roach-His "classic" Structures from Silence.

Liz Story- Especially the song Unaccountable Effect (duet with Mark Isham)

Jonn Serrie - Flightpath, Tingri (haven't heard newer discs)

Michael Danna - Try "Sirens" maybe...

Dead Can Dance- more "world" than "space"...

I'll stew on it some more.... :)

Planetarium Music Suggestions

Hi Avian... Thor here under my Forum name that I can't seem to change [etched in cyberstone I guess].

1. Tangerine Dream- any of their albums up until 77
2. Eno - any and all of his ambient series
3. Sigur Ros
4. Jean Michael Jarre
5. Stomu Yamashta - "Sea and Sky" album
6. Phillip Glass "Koyaniskatsi"
7. Vaughn Williams- "Fantasies/The Lark Ascending/Five Variants"
Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Neville Marriner [conducting], Iona Brown-violin, Kenneth Heath-cello, Skaila Kanga-harp
>>>It needs to be this recording though on DERAM record... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=music
The Lark Ascending is awesome, Williams music is very "pastoral and ambient sounding.
8. Holst - "The Planets" both the Herbert Von Karajin and Tomita versions are good.
9. Wendy Carlos - "Digital Moonscapes" http://www.wendycarlos.com/cdcovers/DMNew.jpg
10 Vangelis - " Albedo 0.39"
http://vangeliscollector.com/vangelis_albedo.htm

hope this helps
Thor:rolleyes:

planetarium music suggestions

Lot of good picks here, I'll add to the Steve Roach bin with Desert Solitaire and The Magnificent Void, looking forward to the show!

black max 11-27-2004 12:47 AM

Aggh, argh, I lost the original reply I posted. Damn!

What did I say?

Some of the more ambient Djam Karet, particularly from "The Devouring" and "Burning the Hard City."

Stomu Yamash'ta is a good choice -- if you can find "Freedom is Frightening," try that, too.

Tom Verlaine's "Warm and Cool." Wonderful album.

Steve Naive's "It's Raining Somewhere" -- nice piano. Goes well with Moraz/Bruford and Hackett/Hackett's Satie recordings.

Fripp and Eno. Also Harold Budd, Jon Hassell, and Michael Brook.

Byrne's "Catherine Wheel" would go well with the previously suggested "Bush of Ghosts." Even some Talking Heads tracks like "The Overload" or "Drugs."

Some of Pink Floyd's old film recordings such as "Cirrus."

Damn, I forget what else I put down.

I agree, but these two are heavy...I think there are 2-4 that are ambiant in nature...

black max 11-27-2004 10:00 PM

>>>I agree, but these two are heavy...I think there are 2-4 that are ambiant in nature...

Most of the tracks on those albums are fairly heavy, but several tracks stand out as being quite -- well, okay, not ambient, but mellow. DK's most ambient album is "Suspension and Displacement," but I'm just not that fond of that album.

There are also 1-2 tracks from "A Night for Baku" that might fit, and a couple from "Ascension" and "New Dark Age." They'll take some listening and some sorting for Avian to make his decision, but they're worth it. A couple of examples: "Topanga Sunrise" fits a more upbeat, jazzy mood; "Feast of Ashes" a more somber sound.

Rick and Roll 11-27-2004 10:13 PM

can't argue with you there...good points. Yeah I think that neat tune is "sexy beast" off of Baku....

black max 12-02-2004 10:35 PM

I think you're right. On the whole, I'm not too sold on "Baku." Too repetitive and self-derivative. But that may just be me. My son's best friend (15 yrs old and a major metal head) LOVES "Hungry Ghost." FWIW.

that proves it, I love that record....and that song....oops!

black max 12-03-2004 02:35 PM

To cop a phrase from Yesspaz, "Ghost" freakin rawks. I've been caught playing air guitar or steering wheel drums to that one on more than one occasion.

Spaz copped that from the punk scene. MxPx has a song called "Punk Rawk Show" which of course lampoons the fake British accent American punk bands try to use.

black max 12-04-2004 01:21 PM

MxPx, there's a band I haven't thought about in a while. Good one. I was listening to Gang of Four yesterday...does that count? (Not much ambient music from the Gang, I'm afraid, unless Avian wants to horrify his audience with "Anthrax.")

gmknobl 01-13-2005 08:10 AM

Try to find these suggestions!

A few suggestions:

Soundtrack to Ghost in the Shell - all but two tracks are progressive in what they use. The neat thing is that few can understand what the chorus sings because it's in ancient Japanese! This is an absolute MUST HAVE album. I'll be glad to send you snippets of songs if you're curious. It's hard to come by in the state. Had to order direct from a Japanese company.

Soundtrack to Akira - Not sure this is progressive but it's definitely unique. Some uptempo and mellow stuff arranged very unusually.

War of the Worlds - This is very pop-ish but it tells a theatre wide story and that for me qualifies it as prog. Made by Jeff Wayne, I think, it's the one that features 70s music stars such as Justin Hayward and is narrated by Richard Burton.

I also suggest checking out other music by Kenji Kawai, who did the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack, such as the Patlabor 2 (2002 version) soundtrack. Some very nice stuff here.

moses 01-13-2005 02:37 PM

GITS!

I loved Ghost in the Shell! VERY interesting film. Akira... nuff said.
