Aural Moon - Progressive Rock Discussion - Show 69

We've got a special show by Dinosaur and an Ozrics show or two coming up, plus a couple of themes and probably a few mixed bag shows. A lot of prog gets missed in the name of themes, so that's why I'll just play a few mixed shows. Rosfest is around the corner, so no shortage of material.

This week is a show I cobbled together after listening again to Joe Satriani's self-titled record. I thought, this should be on the Moon. Well it actually is. However, I don't know where his first three CD's are...I'll check, if they're not on the Moon I'll get them here:thumbsup:

Anyway, I was thinking about artists who later in their careers, just name their records the name of the band. So silly. So let's honor their lack of effort with a show!

Jon Lord and Ian Paice shine on this record. Just great stuff. Lalena is a Donovan song, very much sounding like the times. Rosemary, about Rosemary's baby, has a great line ("Why didn't Rosemary ever take the pill"). Would have been interesting to see what turn the band would have taken if they kept Rod Evans, but I think they turned out just fine.

Their fourth release, song-oriented with great musicianship. Adds up to a great live show. Not really proggy, but a personal favorite.

Missing one song on the Moon...not sure whether that was intentional so I left it out (Look My Way is the name). A CD that marks a chang in direction for Satch...The first two were balls-out rockers with incredible solos, featuring Stu Hamm, the monster, on bass. His third "The Extremist" had some pounding tunes but some softer ones. And the fourth, "Flying In A Blue Dream", more of the same. This is part-bluesy, part subtle, a few rockers. Manu Katche, in my top 10 of drummers, gives a fresh feel to his music.
