Phideaux

Hello,

Glad to be on board, nice site and radio station...

Been a prog fan for about 16 years now, starting from my discovery of Jethro Tull and Rush (Tull is still my favorite band), then getting into the prog world in college in the 90s, getting into bands like Marillion, Yes, Genesis, echolyn, Angalagard, Crimson, Deus Ex Machina, etc., the standard fare. :)

Anyways I had been an a several year drought as far as discovering new music until I recently joined the MySpace bandwagon (see my links below, I'm also a musician). My favorite is Phideaux, an immensely talented musician who doesn't necessarily fit nicely in the "prog" category but has some obvious influences like Tull, Genesis and Van Der Graaf but has established his own identity, quite deep and very refreshing.

Anyways a few tunes are at http://www.myspace.com/phideaux (Chupacabras is his sort of nod to prog "epics") but I highly recommend his whole CD catalog, I've not had this kind of experience with albums growing on me (picking up new details with each listen) since discovering the Tull classics many years ago. His website http://bloodfish.com also has his first album available as a free download. My favorites right now are Ghost Story and 313.

Didn't see him in the playlist so I thought I'd mention him, he definitely deserves more recognition. :)

So ANYONE else listen to this guy? :)

I just found him very refreshing after getting kind of bored with the more well known modern prog stuff (the Spock's Beards, Dream Theaters, IQs, Transatlantics, Flower Kings, Ayreons etc. of the prog world) much of which is certainly quality music but kind of leaves me flat after a while, has a sort of "been there done that" cliche feel to a lot of times (case in point... jumped in on a prog radio station today and heard something that sounded just like a lost Gabriel-era Genesis tune, turns out it was from IQ's Dark Matter). I'm just kind of in the mood for something different these days...

As a suggestion for the Aural Moon playlist, the piece Chupacabras might be a nice option (his sort of nod to "prog epics"). His first album is available for free on his website http://www.bloodfish.com

His focus seems to be on interesting compositions with lots of nice subtle touches, not really over the top time sig changes and blazing solos but certainly in the creative tradition of complex/unique songwriting like Tull, Van Der Graaf, David Bowie, Pink Floyd etc... interesting harmonic development, strong melodies, unique arragements and song structures...

Re: Phideaux

I like to use graphics and there is a color palette for our use. So what would be universally good other than white?
Vax Says his forum Background is White.
My Olias mode is Dark Grey almost black.
I have been choosing only from the middle tones to accommodate these diverse contrasts.......so what color is Jim using and does that mean that he can't see the Dropjaw smilie that is the same color as the text? I wonder what color does looks good on all the different Backgrounds..........Try to Brighten a dull world and Sheeeesh

OK, I have gone thru all the Forum formats and find BLUE the common denominator of Backgrounds and problematic, so I will not using this hue to make it easyer...
