The Fusion Reactor #208 - The Post-Rock Reactor

This week, I'm exploring post-rock. There are admittedly some similarities between this and math rock, although generally the post-rock rhythms are not as complex. The wikipedia "definition" mentions using rock instruments to make non-rock music, and I guess that's a place to start, although it doesn't completely cover it. You'll just have to listen...

Look at That Car, It's Full of Balloons! - A Minor Forest 8:38
Like Herod - Mogwai 11:45
Golden State Overnight - Tarentel 4:57
Jetty - Tortoise 8:22
Tteraj - I. Invitation - Mandrake Project 1:23
Tteraj - II. Arrival & Acceptance - Mandrake Project 5:56
Tteraj - III. Exit - Mandrake Project 1:38
Jeweled Turtle - Guapo 13:09
She Dreamt She Was A Bulldozer, She Dreamt She Was Alone In An Empty Field - Godspeed You! Black Emperor 18:58
Hafssol - Sigur Rós 12:25

And next week, we'll go back to fusion, I promise!

Nice selection Moses. Did you consider Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk?

Talk Talk occurred to me but I didn't have any on hand to play.

What's this from? I don't know this title.

I learned the term differently. I heard the term post rock means after rock, meaning "what do punky or artsy rock bands play when they get tired of playing boring rock and roll?"

Don't forget Tristeza, Pele, or The Album Leaf.:D

Ah, I see the problem. Did you download this from Last.fm? They've got the title wrong. "She Dreamt..." is the title of a section of "Antennas to Heaven."

Antennas to Heaven
1. "Moya Sings 'Baby-O'..." 1:00
2. "Edgyswingsetacid" 0:58
3. "[Glockenspiel Duet Recorded on a Campsite In Rhinebeck, N.Y.]" 0:47
4. "'Attention...Mon Ami...Fa-Lala-Lala-La-La...' [55-St. Laurent]" 1:18
5. "She Dreamt She Was a Bulldozer, She Dreamt She Was Alone in an Empty Field" 9:43
6. "Deathkamp Drone" 3:09
7. "[Antennas to Heaven...]" 2:02

I believe I downloaded it from eMusic, perhaps they have the same error.

The Sigur Ros is from Von.

What about Explosions In The Sky? Could use another American representative in the list. :alien:

That's a very interesting thought, one that had not occurred to me. These bands are from all over, huh?

A Minor Forest - U.S.
Mogwai - Scotland
Tarentel - U.S.
Tortoise - U.S.
Mandrake Project - U.S.
Guapo - U.K.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Canada
Sigur Rós -Iceland

Four of the 8 are from the U.S., I wouldn't say the U.S. is under-represented.

My bad. For some reason I was mistakenly under the impression Tortoise and Tarentel were from the UK and europe. Sorry. I didn't know Minor Forest.
