Show 71 - Ozrics Part One

Two full shows of Ozric Tentacles Although they're playing at Nearfest this year, I've been wanting to playing them on the show for a long time.

This week's show will go to 1990, through Erpland. Selections will come from the Vitamin-enhanced box set and Erpland. Next week will feature eight discs after 1990.

This show features the "early years" of small gigs and whatever else they did (ask Keith or Jam for more details )

Joie Hinton, my favorite Ozric keydoardist, is on all of this week's songs. Ed Wynne on guitars and keys of course.

Most of their CD's contain a reggae song, a Middle-East inflected cut, some ambient tunes, and some flat-out in your face rockers. More jamming and spacey early in their career. Next week we'll hear their more heavy fusion side, with even better propulsion from the bass and drums, another Ozric trademark.

from "Erpsongs":

Velmwend
Fast Dots
Thyroid
Spiral Mind
Descension
Dots Thots

Disc One of the box set introduces us to the unique Ozric sound.

from "Tantric Obstacles"

Og-Ha-Be
Shards of Ice
Sniffing Dog
Atmosphear

Og-Ha-Be is trademark Ozrics, a staple of the live set. This second disc cements their sound.

from "Live Ethereal Cereal"

Erpriff

A short song taken out to nine minutes, as only they can.

from "There Is Nothing"

The Sacred Turf
O-I
Imhotep
Invisible Carpet

O-I is another concert staple, also appearing on a later record. Imhotep is a 12 minute journey, a personal favorite. Great percussion. This is my favorite CD from the set.

from "Sliding Gliding Worlds"

Yaboop Yaboop
Soda Water
Guzzard
Kick Muck
Fetch Me The Pongmaster
White Rhino Tea

Here's six ass-kickers. Guzzard clocks in at 2:05, but it's worth every second. Soda Water and Pongmaster have a hypnotic bass line, and Kick Muck is yet another concert cut.

from "The Bits Between the Bits"

Fragmentary Aura
Sparkling Oasis
Tidal Otherness
Secret Names
Floating Seeds

The final box set disc has odds and ends that weren't on the early cassettes. But the songs are solid. Secret Names is a very cool tune, you can dance to it!

from "Afterswish"

Chinatype

Afterswish is a collection of the box set songs...there's only three new songs, this is one of them.

from "Erpland"

Eternal Wheel
Tidal Convergence
Sunscape
Mysticum Arabicola
Erpland
Snakepit
Iscence

Seven cuts from the 12-song, 2 disc release. My favorite Ozrics CD.

Eternal Wheel - appeared on There is nothing, but this version kicks serious ass.
Tidal Convergence - well written, great song. Had to upload it, didn't see it in the folder.
Sunscape - always played live, has a sound atypical for Ozrics. One of their best songs.
Mysticum Arabicola - a Mid-East jaunt..hang onto your Camel!
Erpland - this and Jurassic Shift are my fav songs. Great live, no-holds barred...
Snakepit - Three minutes of good fusion.
Iscence - features flutist and all around crazy man John on vocals. i hear John is not in the band now (boo!). A reggae-inflected tune.

Let the tentacles entwine you!
