Gnosis Radio playlist
I was scanning the Gnosis radio playlist, and saw with amazement a great number of punk acts that I used to listen to. One in paticular, the Minutemen, would revel in their ability to write minute songs.
What in the hell is going on here? It said "prog-punk". What? Is prog-country next? These bands aren't prog-punk. They're just punk (and mostly good). I do not have an aversion to these bands being on AM. It's just that I am baffled as to why fusion is so frowned upon here (or at the very least underrepresented), and punk is played. Some of you like straight jazz. And hey, put some hard rock (OK, call it metal even though I loathe that term) up against some of the drivel that passes for prog. Did something go over my head here? |

Fusion frowned upon?
McGill Manring Stevens, Interiors, Tunnels, Return to Forever, Bruford Levin, Brand X... I could go on and on with how much fusion we play here. I thought the punk selection was good - definately the more progressive side of the genre. For instance, we also play David Bowie, who's not a prog artist -- but we play some of his more progressive tunes. Same goes for U2 (Passengers), Led Zeppelin and others Plus, it's just one show. Jim had made a comment about some music suggestions as being more on the fusion side than what you normally play. It was stated in a way that suggested that it is not standard prog fare. Frowned upon could be an overstatement, guilty as charged.
Not all of David Bowie's progressive output is played here. Also, just having Robert Fripp on your songs does not automatically deem it prog. Here's my point - somebody's got to be the bad guy here. I like a lot of pop and punk, including the Gnosis selections. I just didn't know that you could even call punk progressive. It's just good headbanging stuff (a headache is what I now have). |

![]() I think it's quite good to have a few tracks in there that aren't totally "Progressive". I've just heard the Mozart 40th Symphony and it fitted in nicely with what was around it.
Heaven forbid we start up the Classical Yes/No, Philip Glass, Fusion arguments again......I don't think my brain would stand it.... but a little diversion here and there isn't a bad thing. I think we have sufficient on the playlist for that already but if someone wants to put on Pat Metheny or, especially, Frank Gambale then I won't complain. I actually really enjoyed the "Punk" part of the Gnosis show. Had me looning around the room like a madman. My wife nearly called an ambulance because she thought I was having a seizure. ![]() |

Well said
Sounds like a reasonable stance to me.

reading a little more closely
For some reason, I missed the introductory post where it said "prog or not".
I stand (sit) corrected. |

Chiming in with the "official" Gnosis word...
Well, sure, a lot of the stuff we play isn't "prog", but then, we never said the whole show (or a certain percentage of it) would be "prog". Basically nothing is "frowned upon" in our show. Expect to hear more punk, fusion, jazz (of all kinds), among other styles, and heck, even actual proggy prog! |

I missed the punk-prog
I missed the punk-prog show, although I think the term Progressive-Punk is a better term for what we would like. In that vein, I like a lot of the "prog" styled punk of MxPx and Slick Shoes.
