Buying Prog in NYC

Hello, can anyone help me: I'm from England, but I'm off to New York on Friday and I was wondering if anyone can recommend some good places to buy progressive music on CD? I am particularly interested in the 70s European scene, but also like jazz, fusion and avant garde / instrumental / Cuneiform bands as well. I would appreciate any advice, also if anyone knows of any good gigs happening in that city next week. Thanks a lot. Poth.

Don't bother Poth. US record shops suck wind when it comes to stocking prog.
Do your buying on-line.

What Friday, BTW?

Spiraling and Skeleton Breath are playing at the NJ Prog House. Where will you be in NYC?

Re: Buying Prog in NYC

Thanks for this honest, if rather depressing, reply, VAX Man. But, never mind, I'm still looking forward to the the trip. I haven't heard either of the bands you mention, but I'll look them up prior to travelling. I'll be staying near Times Square so I don't know if NJ Proghouse is too far away or not. I'm also only there from this Friday to next Friday, so I need to find time for non-prog related activity - so my wife keeps insisting. She feels Gentle Giant is the many-headed antichrist. Can you believe some people? Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Re: Buying Prog in NYC

Well..............I was born in NY, but only lived there long enough to enjoy.........maybe, Burl Ives?!?!?! The last records I bought in NY were Mike Bloomfield's Supersession and a Vanilla Fudge LP Anyway.......HEY!!! WELCOME!!! To the USA and ENJOY your stay. I'm sure there has to be a store around there somewhere. I haven't found one here in Maryland, though. I was a big "prog" fan in the 70's, but lost touch with music when radio went down the tubes (HA!). I started coming here about 9 months ago.........and THANKS!!! to The Moon I've been able to catch up and bypass all my missed days of music. Not only have I bought a hundred some CD's lately, but also got back into playing my guitars. The Moon has lit a new path for me and I like it!!! Oh BTW!! The wife thing...............I was hiding allot of activity in the beginning, but now she just thinks I've lost my mind and is OK with me pursuing my LATE "Mid LIfe" crisis. It's ALL good!! HAVE A SAFE GREAT TRIP and ENJOY!!!

You can find some rare gems in stores...but for the most part, on-line is the way to go. There's a thread that has the easiest ones, maybe someone can link it up here.

Don't worry about the depressing part, it's a character trait

It's a rare bird that likes Gentle Giant.....if she knew the bands Derek Shulman's signed, she'd be shocked

York, my friend Chris runs Of Sound Mind. It's on-line, but also in Bel Air he has his collection (at his house and place of business). He's also at Orion all the time, so although it's not a store, per se, it's a resource for prog (I just dropped 77 bucks there Sat PM

I've been told that just across the border in Newark (of all places) there is a store called Vintage Vinyl that has tons of prog CDs. I don't know exactly where it is, or how far it is from Times Square though.

VV is a used shop and does have the occasional gem. I don't know what Poth has available to him for transportation. He could hop a train or even take a subway to the Path to get to Newark. I'd not advise his travelling in Newark without a guide though; there are places even I wouldn't want to be caught in unarmed.

The three deadliest cities in the nation... Trenton, Camden and Newark.

Re: Buying Prog in NYC

Thanks again to everyone for their advice. Particularly indebted to VAXman in his attempts not to get me butchered and bin-bagged in the streets of Newark. I think I'll stay in the main city. I'll still trawl around the used shops in the village looking for jazz etc, so you never know. Finally, what a fantastic thing AM is - it could never exist over here; if a radio station doesn't have a brainless megaphone foghorning at people telling them what packaged pap to listen to, the listeners' minds go into meltdown. Anyway, hooray for prog. Cheerio.

Are you in NYC for business or holiday?

Perhaps we could meet up for a beer or three. Do you drink Guinness?

Welcome to the anti-brainless-megaphone-foghorning-pre-packged-pap oasis we know as Aural Moon.

Re: Buying Prog in NYC

Seeing as I will be on holiday, VAXman, then a beer sounds a fine idea. However, I only have tomorrow left when I can check these forums (although internet cafes are an option, I suppose), so if you could suggest a place and time convenient to yourself, I will endeavour to make it. Cheers. Poth.

Where will you be staying when you are in NYC? One place or moving about?

Re: Buying Prog in NYC

Hi, VAXman. Am having a great time in the city. Tried to phone you yesterday evening, and will prob. try again later today. In the meantime, thought I would send this as well. If you could reply with a time and a place for a beer - anytime suits me - then that would be good. I'm off cycling in Central Park now: must remember that you guys drive on the right. Cheers, Poth.

Yes. Received the msg in my voice mail. I was at the NJ Prog House last eve when you called (Spiraling w/ Skeleton Breath).

I just mentioned to my Mrs. that we might try to get together one evening this week. We're trying to get our income taxes finalized this weekend.

Tuesday is out because my son has a baseball game. How does Wednesday or Thursday look for you?

Yes, Wednesday would be good for me as am offski on Thursday. I have lots of good maps so just let me know when and where is best for you. The good news is that I've found a whole plethora of prog here in the city, but I'll give you more details when I see you. Cheers, Poth.

Manhatten is easy to traverse... it's cartisian! All you need to know is how to count. Numbered Avenues from east to west; numbered streets from south to north -- save for that pesty diagonal Broadway that goes against the rule.
