Nokia Night Of The Proms in Dortmund on Dec. 13th

The event took place in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund and the place (a multi-purpose Arena, once the biggest in Europe, where in the early 80's also The Wall by PF was performed) was packed. Approximately 9.000 ppl attending the show.

Nokia Night Of The Proms is a event where classic meets pop and rock. So there is a philarmonic orchestra (55 musicians), a choir (50 singers), a electric band (5 musicians) and every year different special guests. This year there were (without clasification):

John MIles
Mike Oldfield
OMD
Chico and the Gypsies (Gypsy Kings)
Ike Turner and Lyrica
Miriam Stockley
Tony Henry (classical tenor)

The event begun with a classical piece, followed by Ike Turner (horrible) performing his only hits he had with Tina in the 70's. After that the first highlight, John Miles performing his tune Music (what I always wanted to see live since i knew the tune). MO followed with a 15 min extract of Tubular Bells, which together with the orchestra was fantastic. MO also performed another of his instrumentals, which I could not identify. Then a 30 min horror with Gypsy Kings begun and left us after 1:30 h to a 25 min brake (I did not mention some tunes performed by Miriam Stockley and Tony Henry, which were ok.

After the brake the orchestra performed the Firebird from Strawinsky, excellent, followed by Musorsky's Pictures at An Exhibition (allways extracts) adapted with electrical instruments (see ELP), great. After that Tony Henry and Miles Davis performed a duet, classical Tenor and "normal" voice, Miserere..this gave chicken skin so great it was.

Unfortunately Ike Turner appeared again with his fake Tina and they played another song (buah..)

OMD showed up and played some of there past hits. To tell you the truth, they were really not bad..

A little waltz time, were the audience was animated to dance waltz followed, and then MO gave with singer Miriam Stockey some of his hits (e.g. Moonlight Shadow from Islands) ending with Shadow on The wall sung by John Miles.

The show ended with the traditional song of the night of the proms in London (KW, please help me, I cannot remember the name, where all sing...).

At the end all artist were presented again and sung all together Yellow Submarine of The Beatles.

Of course there were more tunes in between (e.g. John playing a Bruce Springsteen tune etc), which are not mentioned here.

To put it to a point: Besides of the Gypsy Kings and Ike Turner, it was an excellent show, lasting in total (with the 25 min break) 3.5 hours. Doris and I had great fun and are thinking to go again next year.

Could be Jerusalem (Maybe)
Land of hope and Glory (Doubtful) or
Rule Brittania (Highly unlikely)

Sounds like a terrific night out lotus. As we were chatting about in the shoutbox, John Miles' "Music" is a terrific song. Sums up the Aural Moon vibe IMHO. "To live without my music, would be impossible to do. For in this world of trouble, my music pulls me through."

Thanks for sharing.
