Show 137 - "Go Fish"

Airing Sunday, July 8 from 8-11 PM EST and Monday, July 9 from 1-4 EST

This week we're back to themes. It will be awhile after this show before we come back to full shows of one artist or silly themes....I have about 5-6 shows to play highlighting 2006-2007 releases and new purchases (from any time period). Look for that starting next week.

Going FISHING this week.....

Tinyfish - Tinyfish (2006)

Motorville
Fly Like A Bird
Nine Months On Fire
Too High For Low Company
All Of The People, All Of The Time
Build Your Own Enemy
God Eat God
Sundried
All Hands Lost
Tinyfish

Simon Godfrey leads this great new British band. Simon is the brother of Jem Godfrey, who put out a great disc, Frost's "Milliontown" (which will be aired here sometime over the summer). It's song oriented, with no keys (guitar synth, though). It rocks in a Neo sort of way but is more developed and driving. I especially like the 10-minute "All Hands Lost".

Chris Squire - cuts from Fish Out of Water (1975)

Lucky Seven
Silently Falling

A somewhat larger Fish.....

A classic solo record that is being re-released this year. Has the unusual combination of Pat Moraz, Bill Bruford, and Squire. Bruford and Moraz have performed together many times (I used to see their music for piano and drums tour in the early 80's). Also, Moraz and Squire were on Relayer about this time. But no Bruford. And Mel Collins does his usual stellar work on the sax.

Fish

The largest Fish.....

The Perception of Johnny Punter
Cliche

"Punter" is the opening number from Sunsets on Empire, my favorite of DD's solo records. "Cliche" is a sweet tune which closes out the Vigil In A Wilderness of Mirrors record. Great guitar work by Frank Usher.

Strangefish

Listening To Ghosts
Simple Life
Ignorance of Bliss

Anyone who knows me knows how much I like this band. It would be nice to have them at Rosfest, they would be the perfect band there. After seeing them in the UK I can assure you that they are great live.

The first two are from Full Scale, and "Bliss" is from Fortune Telling.

Beardfish - Sleeping In Traffic: Part One (2007)

...on the verge of sanity
Sunrise
Afternoon Conversation
And Never Know
Roulette
Dark Poet
Harmony
The Ungodly Slob
Year of the Knife
Without You
Same Old Song (Sunset)

Swedish fish, yum!

The impetus for the theme, I've been eagerly awaiting this release. I can't believe these young men have three CD's out already, with the last a double. Many elements are combined by Rikard Sjoblom, from Zappa to Echloyn to Gentle Giant. This record has more laid-back and "tender" moments, but the songwriting is just as solid. Roulette is a winner of a song. Was very pleased to catch them at Progday, they're a great band.

Of course mossy would say that show #137 should be playing Pineapple Thief's cd '137.

And Rick would say that has as much chance of happening as Blink 182 being played on show 182

Just heard two more excellent CD's last night...the quality in the past few years in prog is stunning....I'm starting to thing it's the early 70's all over again

While the rest of you are suffering the smell of fish, I'll be attending a Rush gig. I just wanted to say, enjoy the Tinyfish. Martha and I know the guitarist/vocalist Jim Sanders well. He was in NYC about a month ago and we met up with him for dinner and pints at Stout NYC.

Enjoy the Tinyfish and have a few pints of 'Treadmill Lager'.

It was OK but too hot. It's a half-open amphitheater packed with crazed Rush fans so it was hotter under the roof than outside.

The crowd and Rush were way too loud but they were far better behaved than the last time I saw Rush at the Arts Center. The last time, too many youngsters drunk, disorderly and puking in their seats.

Peart still had the spinning drum kit for his solo.
