GLASS HAMMER
ABOUT GLASS HAMMER ....from the GLASS HAMMER official website Glass Hammer is an American progressive rock band from Chattanooga, Tennessee. They formed in 1992 when multi-instrumentalists Steve Babb and Fred Schendel began to write and record “Journey of the Dunadan”, a concept album based on the story of Aragorn from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. To their surprise, the album sold several thousand units via the Internet, The QVC Shop-At-Home Network, and their own toll-free order number. As such, Babb and Schendel were convinced that the band was a project worth continuing. The stage was then set for a successful career that now includes numerous albums, DVDs and an enthusiastic, world-wide fan base that continues to grow at a steady rate. While many musicians have appeared on Glass Hammer albums over the years, Babb and Schendel have remained the core creative force of the band. Both play a variety of instruments, but Babb is better known as the bassist while Schendel is the primary keyboardist. And though they also sing, a number of other vocalists (most notably Michelle Young, Walter Moore, Susie Bogdanowicz, Carl Groves and Jon Davison) have also handled lead vocal duties. Lyrically, Glass Hammer is inspired mostly by their love of literature (most notably Tolkien, C. S. Lewis and John Krakauer) and Babb’s love of Victorian prose and medieval mythology. Musically, they lean towards 70’s driven symphonic rock, focusing on epic-length songs anchored by Babb’s distinctive bass guitar work and strong keyboard playing from Schendel; specifically Hammond organs in the tradition of ELP. They have a superb melodic flow to the music they make, encapsulating real power and dynamics without ever becoming overpowering. Their most apparent influences are Yes, ELP, Genesis, and, to a less noticeable extent, Camel. Fans and critics are usually quick to attest that Glass Hammer have managed to combine those influences into a unique style all their own. Critically acclaimed albums have continued to flow from the Glass Hammer studio, with the most successful and noteworthy being “Chronomtree” (2000), “Lex Rex” (2002), “The Inconsolable Secret” (2005) and “IF” (2010). Vocalists and fan-favorites Carl Groves and Susie Bogdanowicz took a temporary hiatus from the band after 2009 and vocalist Jon Davison took over as lead vocalist for three studio albums; “IF”, “Cor Cordium” and “Perilous”. Kamran Alan Shikoh joined the band at the same time taking on the role of guitarist. During the recording of “Perilous”, Davison also assumed the role as front-man for Yes. This led to Carl Groves rejoining the Glass Hammer in 2013 for live performances and recording. Aaron Raulston joined at the same time as drummer for the group. Susie Bogdanowicz rejoined in late 2013 and appeared along with Raulston, Groves and Shikoh in 2014 concerts. Glass Hammer’s “Ode To Echo” release for 2014 featured performances by many of the band’s vocalists, including Bogdanowicz, Young, Moore and Davison, though Carl Groves was handling the lion’s share of the vocal duties for the band. “The Breaking Of The World” followed in 2015 along with the two CD one DVD set “Double Live” which was recorded and filmed at ROSFest in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Carl Groves and Susie Bogdanowicz fronted the group throughout 2015. 2016’s “Valkyrie” saw the lineup shift somewhat as Carl Groves departed and Susie Bogdanowicz stepped to the fore. Before recording sessions began, Babb, Schendel, Shikoh and Raulston rehearsed the music of “Valkyrie” for several weeks, as if they were preparing for a live concert. This was a new approach for Glass Hammer album production. According to the band, this was done in order to better capture the live energy of an actual Glass Hammer performance. “Valkyrie” was also conceived as a “full-blown concept album” in the tradition of “Lex Rex”, and “The Inconsolable Secret”. The current (2018) official lineup of the group is Babb, Schendel, Raulston and Bogdanowicz. Other prog musicians and rock artists have made contributions to Glass Hammer projects, including Jon Anderson of Yes, Arjen Lucassen, Rich Williams and David Ragsdale of Kansas, Rob Reed of Magenta and Randy Jackson of Zebra. Glass Hammer has also appeared with The Adonia String Trio and performed two concerts (2006-2007) with 120 plus member choirs from Belmont University and Lee University. PYMLICO
ABOUT PYMLICO ....from the PYMLICO official website Pymlico is an instrumental band from Oslo, Norway, led by composer and drummer Arild Brøter. The band mainly plays what has been described as a mix between progressive rock and fusion. However, their music also offers catchy hooks and singable melodies associated with pop music, alongside grandiose themes more in the vein of movie sound tracks. This combination of genres and a high level of musicianship gives the band it’s distinctive sound. Pymlico Øyvind Brøter: Keyboards Stephan Hvinden: Guitars Andreas Sjo Engen: Guitars Robin Havem Løvøy: Saxophones Are Nerland: Bass guitar / synth bass Arild Brøter: Drums / keyboards Oda Rydning: Percussion Pymlico was founded as a creative outlet for Arild Brøter in 2009. This led to three album releases: Inspirations (2011), Directions (2012) and Guiding Light (2014). The albums were made with a massive support of guest musicians, and they all received positive feedback and favourable reviews in the international progrock society. With a growing desire to perform the music live, Arild gathered a smaller band to do concerts – this eventually became the band Pymlico as we see today. In 2016 Pymlico signed on Apollon Records Prog and have since released four much acclaimed albums, «Meeting Point» (2016), «Nightscape» (2018) «On This Day» (2020) and «Supermassive» (2022). The last years has seen Pymlico being busy playing several festivals like «Festival Crescendo» in Sant-Palais-sur-Mer, France, «Slottsskogen Goes Progressive» in Gothenburg, Sweden, «Artrock i Stadsträdgården» in Lidköping, Sweden, «Haugaland Rock & Prog» in Haugesund, Norway, «Close to the Rain» in Bergen, Norway, and «We Låve Rock» in Hurum, Norway. The band has done support for Italian band The Watch and shared stages with bands like Magic Pie, Hasse Fröberg & Musical Companion, The Windmill, Gentle Knife, Infringement, Panzerpappa nad Oak. ARENA
ABOUT ARENA ....ARENA Biography from Progarchives.com Arena biography Founded in 1995 in Virginia Water, Surrey, UK - Still active as of 2020 The gathering of ARENA's famous musicians makes a super-group: Mick POINTER (Ex-MARILLION) plays the drums, Clive NOLAN (PENDRAGON) the keyboards, and Keith MORE (ASIA) played the guitar until replaced by John Mitchell (Ex-Kino). Vocalist Rob SOWDEN has been with the band since IMMORTAL? and the bass player is Ian SALMON. There have also been some guest appearances by Tracy HITCHINGS (singer of QUASAR, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN & LANDMARQ) and Steve ROTHERY (MARILLION's gifted guitarist). "Songs From The Lion's Cage" is then a very professional Progressive rock, both close to MARILLION and hard-rock. "Pride", their second opus issued in 1996 (one year after the previous one) confirmed the high musical level of this band, at a time when they added a touch IQ to their music. Curiously the band's sound gained in heaviness after their 2 first albums, and the music quality increased a lot in originality and musicianship. Recorded in 1998, "The Visitor" alternates passages inspired by Steve HOGARTH's group along with some dark instrumentation. "Immortal" shows a new heavier dimension that still remains anchored in the best neo-Progressive music. "Moviedrome" is an excellent twenty minute track. "Contagion" follows the glorious tradition of "Immortal", although I found it more hard edged and multidimensional from all aspects. This powerful and evoking concept album tells about the quest for redemption, through the vision of a dark and anguishing future. No doubt about it, people won't have to think for a long time before electing the best album of winter 2002-2003! ''Pepper's ghost'' from 2005 sees Arena entering the realms of a quite heavy and very symphonic sound with some metal elements, a real highlight of their career. Long-time members Rod Sowden and Ian Salmon left the band in 2010 and they were replaced by Paul Manzi and John Jowitt respectively, the latter starting his second stint with the band.''The Seventh Degree Of Separation'' offers a very fresh and pounding sound, but the song structures had now become a bit conventional. Same goes for their latest entry, the 2015 ''The Unquiet Sky'', here Jowitt's place has been taken by newcomer Kylan Amos. One of the best bands on the English scene nowadays... GALAHAD
ABOUT GALAHAD ....from the GALAHAD official website Galahad formed in 1985 just for fun playing roughly half covers (Genesis, Zeppelin, Rush, Sabbath, Focus, Marillion etc) and half original material. Galahad then supported a few fairly well known 'Progressive' bands that were coming up at the time including IQ, Pendragon, Haze and later Pallas and Magnum. Then, after mixing it with the slightly 'bigger boys' Galahad decided take it more seriously, and began playing only original material resulting in the release of their first proper album in 1991, 'Nothing Is Written', which was purely self -financed and released independently but which went on to sell several thousand copies. The success of 'Nothing Is Written' was also helped by the fact that the band received substantial air play on BBC Radio One, especially on the Radio One Rock Show hosted by the late, great Tommy Vance. The band then landed themselves with deals in the UK, Japan and Germany. The band has now released fifteen albums including albums by main band offshoots such as Galahad Electric Company and the Galahad Acoustic Quintet. The band has played hundreds of gigs in the UK, Europe and America over the last few years, at times in some very unusual venues! In 2002 Galahad released 'Year Zero' which featured John Wetton (Asia, King Crimson, Family etc.) on guest vocals. In September 2006 Galahad released their debut DVD 'Resonance' , which was recorded live in Katowice, Poland in May 2006. 'Empires Never Last' , which features Karl Groom (Threshold) on engineering duties, was released in 2007 and took the band in a heavier, more muscular, guitar orientated direction. This more contemporary, metallic approach seems to have worked as ‘Empires’ was a great success, both commercially and critically, and resulted in them winning album of the year at the 2007 Classic Rock Society awards. ‘Empires’ was also included in many top 10 album listings for 2007. In the interim and whilst recording TWO new studio albums Galahad released a couple of live albums ‘Sleepless in Phoenixville – Rosfest Live 2007’ and 'Whitchurch 92/93 - Live Archives -Vol.2' (CD/DVD) plus a re-issue of their 1992 Year Zero album, which also contained bonus CD consisting of live versions of tracks from Year Zero. 'Battle Scars', again recorded at Thin Ice by Karl Groom was released in April 2012 and took the band further in to a heavy/rockier direction but mixing it up with a few more overt modern dance/trance and classical influences. 'Beyond the Realms of Euphoria', the second album recorded at the same time was released in October 2012. A comprehensive biography entitled 'One For the Record - The Official Biography of Galahad' written by Andrew Wild was published in April 2013 documenting the history of the band from 1985 to the end of 2012. The Biography also comes with a companion Video Archive DVD which includes many rare and previously unreleased live performances, some dating as far back as 1986. 2014 saw the band release a clutch of EP’s, ‘Seize the Day’, 'Guardian Angel' and 'Mein Hertz Brennt' the latter containing several differing versions of the Rammstein classic. 2014 also saw Tim Ashton re-join the band on bass guitar after an absence of 22 years! 2015 was the 30th anniversary of the band forming, the band celebrated throughout the year with various releases and a special anniversary show at Mr Kyps in Poole on Saturday 4th July. To start the ball rolling in this anniversary year a re-mixed version of 'Empires Never Last' was released in January which also included a couple of extra tracks on the CD version as well as a companion album 'Empires: A curious Companion' (download only from the band's web site) containing demo tracks, some of which were and some of which were not used on the resulting album. In the summer an EP '30' was released as a limited edition containing four tracks which would later appear on the 'When Worlds Collide' 30th anniversary release. The band released a 2CD live set 'Solidarity - Live in Konin' in September 2015, which was recorded in 2013 during the Battle Scars/Euphoria tour. A 20th anniversary re-mastered digipack edition of 'Sleepers' containing an extra track was also released in the Autumn 2015. To finish off 2015 nicely the band released a double CD retrospective compilation album 'When Worlds Collide' which includes ten brand new recordings of old songs, some of which date back to 1985 and one track 'City of Freedom' which has never been recorded before, as well as a selection of tracks from their last three studio albums and recent EPs. This epic release, which also includes a 12 page booklet, clocks in at a mammoth 2 hours and 36 minutes and thus is great value for money! 2016 will be spent mainly writing new material for the next all new Galahad studio album. Spring 2017 saw the release of 'Quiet Storms' showing a more introspective, mellow side to the band. 2018 saw the release of a full on Prog/rock album 'Seas of Change' which, in true 'Prog' tradition, contains just one long form 42 minute piece of music which was performed in it's (almost) entirety at all live shows in 2018, which included performances in England, Scotland, Wales, Poland, The Netherlands and Norway. Galahad were also so nominated for the 2018 UK Progressive Rock awards in the 'UK Band/Artist of the year' category, eventually won, not surprisingly by Steven Wilson! 2019 sees the band concentrating mainly on writing and recording a brand new studio album as well as working on another exciting re-issue project. Dean released 'Constellations' an electronic album influenced by the likes of Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk etc. featuring Stu on vocals on three tracks and Lee on guitar on one track. 2020 has been very busy year in spite of or maybe because of the Covid emergency seeing the release of 'Sleepers' on vinyl LP for the first time 25 years after its original release in 1995, available on both white and black vinyl. A re-vamped Following Ghosts is re-released as a 3CD set including a brand new re-mix of the original album plus a second CD 'Alternative Ghosts' containing alternative versions of all the original tracks and CD3 which is re-master of 'De-Constructing Ghosts. This new edition also contains new artwork, commentaries by some of those involved at the time as well new photos etc. Stu and Dean re-generated the 'Galahad Electric Company' by releasing an album full of songs recorded during lockdown over the period from May to June 2020. 'When The Battle Is Over' is the first GEC album in 21 years and contains a very eclectic mix of material , including the poem 'My Orcha'd in Linden Lea' written by Dorset dialect poet William Barnes in 1856 as well as a song featuring Stu's cat Sammy Gorgeous on meows! Lee Abraham also released an EP 'Western Skies' under the name 'Echo Rain' as well as a new solo album 'Harmony/Synchronicity' featuring several vocalists including Stu Nicholson and Mark Spencer. Dean also released a couple of digital singles 'Unorthodox' and 'In Isolation' as well as the 'Outer Limits EP'. 2021 saw the release of the re-mixed 1998 album 'Following Ghosts' on a a limited double vinyl which is available in standard black, gold and a very limited red and orange splatter version. 'Galahad Electric Company' featuring Dean and Stu also released a second lock down album 'Soul Therapy' on CD. Galahad's long awaited ELEVENTH studio album 'The Last Great Adventurer' which features Mark Spencer on Bass guitar on a brand new Galahad album for the first time ever was released in October 2022. Re: 2022 Work in Progress..ive
THE SAMURAI OF PROG
ABOUT THE SAMURAI OF PROG ....from the THE SAMURAI OF PROG official website The Samurai of Prog (in fact a nickname of Marco) started as a project participating in Finnish Progressive Association Colossus's tribute box-sets produced by Marco. TSOP performed for the first time in Tuonen Tytär II in 2008. But, to be precise, TSOP got its final form shortly after that when Marco asked Kimmo to step in for the Italian Marillion-tribute recording. It was not many months before Steve was asked to join – and the permanent Finnish-Italian-US line-up was complete. Doing music together was so rewarding that soon Marco came with an idea to do a full album. In fact, Steve and Kimmo had been composing music for their other bands, Resistor and Paidarion and for their solo albums, but for some reason TSOP's first two albums included mainly covers. But there were originals all the way from the beginning as well: Besides Kimmo's The Promise, there was David Myers' Before The Lamia in Undercover (2011). In fact you could easily call David the fourth member of TSOP - as there has been at least one of his composition in each and every TSOP album ever since that. By the time Secrets of Disguise (2013) came out Steve had composed an epic ”The Case of Charles Dexter Ward” for ”The Stories of H.P. Lovecraft”. However, maybe it was ”Sweet Iphigenia” that changed the course of TSOP and lead the way to performing original music instead of covers. Sweet Iphigenia was based on a Kimmo's simple barogesque melody, that was given a wonderful treatment and arrangement by Linus Kåse into something special. Thus the idea of performing unreleased music (new of old) was born. That principle was pursued in The Imperial Hotel album (2014). It includes only originals – except the main track, which is based on a demo recording made by England in 1975. The big inspiration to include The Imperial Hotel- track was naturally the fact that we were happy to have Robert Webb from England's original line-up to join us. Robert's role was completed with his other track, Limoncello. Maybe it is fair to say that The Imperial Hotel was a milestone for TSOP in many ways: besides moving aways from covers the groups own sound was better discovered because both the mixing and mastering were done by the group itself for the first time. Moreover, for a first time Ed Unitsky was involved with The Imperial Hotel and his works with TSOP have received a lot of positive response ever since after that. We have always felt that having great artwork and a proper package is essential part of our music, although it may not be so smart in these days of Spotify etc... Even though TSOP's basic line-up has been the same in every album, we would not be here without our guests. They have played important role in every album. One reason why you don't hear so many songs by Marco, Steve or Kimmo is the the fact that especially our wonderful keyboardists (for example Octavio Stampalia, Linus Kåse, Stefan Renström Eduardo Garcia Saluena and Kerry Schacklett) have provided us with such a great compositions that it has been an honor to make them come alive. Be it covers or originals, the basic idea of TSOP has been the same from the beginning: to make high-grade music with heart and feel - and by adding our own sound and touch there. There is a word for that: Samuraization. Alhough modern technology is sometimes utililised indeed, the music is still made and played by human beings, not machines. So, thank you for joining us in this journey; a journey that is perhaps economically insane, but anyway a project which has given us friends all around the world – both musicians and listeners. Your feedback makes us very humble and grateful – and it certainly keeps us moving forward in this journey.... Re: 2022 Work in Progress..ive
ALIANTE
Italian progressive rock has many excellent instrumentalists who have created many good level albums, unfortunately they have a weak point .. easy abandonments after just two albums and this situation does not create the conditions for having groups that can last many years and can with the time to reach the level of the Top bands of the progressive .... and also for the Aliante we are in this umpteenth situation. I arrive five years late to meet this group which started with a formation of three artists with Bass Drums and Keyboards .... and they have released two good level albums that I recommend you listen to "Forme Libere" and "Sul Confine" the first released in 2017 and the second released in 2019 ... you will find them both on youtube and of course it is above all a music that has the keyboards of the excellent Enrico Filippi at the center of each track but the pandemic blocks the project and when they get together to create the third album Enrico Filippi leaves the group and not to go to another group but certainly due to differences on the genre direction of the album and is still without a group: I consider it an important loss because the following ones would certainly have been worthy of attention given the previous two .... however Aliante change lineup and also the style of playing by adding a guitarist and a new keyboardist but they are still able to produce good tracks and that's why I include them in my best tracks of 2022 ... even if I preferred them in the previous lineup, maybe they'll prove me wrong with the next album In the meantime, I will keep keyboardist Enrico Filippi under control if he joins a new group ABOUT ALIANTE ....from the ALIANTE official website ALIANTE are born from an idea of bassist Alfonso Capasso. Precisely on August 17, 2016, the drummer Jacopo Giusti receives a phone call from Alfonso who offers him a new, instrumental, trio formation "bass, drums and keyboards". Jacopo accepts immediately, eager for a new project of unreleased songs and also enthusiastic about returning to play together with Alfonso after so many years. The choice of a keyboard player immediately falls on Enrico Filippi, with whom they had a musical background from 2002 to 2004, while Alfonso and Jacopo have already played together since 1995. The birth of this new project has always been based on the personal style of each of the three, who have channeled their musical experience, teaching and above all musical tastes, a combination that immediately embraced progressive, jazz-rock, improvisations typical of the 70s. The first rehearsals immediately laid the foundations for the structures of the pieces, which arose at the very moment of the performance and in part from Enrico's ideas. The part that surprised the three musicians was the complete freedom that each one has and that they gave to the others. A mutual respect of ideas and music which in the end, defining it in detail, gave the trio the opportunity to define the final structure of the compositions. In March 2017 Aliante entered the recording studio and at Riccardo Andreini's "L'Ottava Nota" they gave birth to their first album entitled "Free Forms" precisely in honor of collective compositional freedom. The disc was printed and distributed by Vannuccio Zanella's MP Records and met with unexpected success that surprised the musicians themselves. In one track there is the narrative voice of Serena Andreini, who reads the introductory text of the disc, written for the occasion by Alfonso. Several concerts followed in the Tuscan area and in the rest of Italy, the most important of which, in 2018 at the Stazione della Birra in Rome, as an opening to the Le Orme concert. In the meantime, a very important collaboration was born, through the owner of the MP Records label, between Aliante and Renzo Zenobi, a singer-songwriter whose curriculum boasts collaborations with Francesco De Gregori, Lucio Dalla, Ennio Morricone, Franco Battiato and many others. The project, destined to turn into Zenobi's current latest album entitled "Volando", saw the participation of Aliante as a studio band and actively involved in the delicate arrangements of the Roman singer-songwriter. The album, released in 2018, also saw the participation in a piece by the pianist Arturo Stalteri. After this collaborative interlude, Aliante returned to writing the pieces for their second album, preferring more the compositions of the singles, then subsequently arranged by the whole band. This is how "Sul Confine" was born, a more sought-after and less improvised album like the previous one, which also sees the presence in a piece of the violinist Marianna Vuocolo. Also this second work, still distributed by MP Records, had a notable success in terms of sales and fans of the progressive genre. In January 2020 Aliante will perform an excellent concert in Milan for the presentation of the album. The global pandemic interrupts live activity in general for all musical events. The three then decide to compose new material, when suddenly Enrico Filippi abandons the project. Alfonso and Jacopo after several auditions, decide to try a guitarist instead of keyboards. Join the band, Davide Capitanio, guitarist with various experiences but above all a researcher of very particular sounds. At the end of the same year, Aliante made their live debut in this new formation, gaining a collective consensus of great enthusiasm. During the concert, the band that opened the set for Aliante had a multi-instrumentalist in their ranks who immediately attracted the attention of the three. After the concert Michele Lenzi (keyboards, bassoon, flute and guitar) was asked to join Aliante. With Michele inside the band, the sound has moved towards an even more sophisticated progressive in terms of sounds and compositions. The songs, once again born from individual ideas, unravel between melodies, psychedelic moments, fusions between guitar, keyboards and bassoon that have enriched the arrangements. After about a year (with the due difficulties related to the Covid restrictions) at the beginning of 2022 Aliante returned to the studio, as always at Andreini's Ottava Nota, recording the much material composed in 2021. On the album there is a return to the feminine in terms of narration with Serena Andreini and to the violin with Marianna Vuocolo, both in a piece of the disc.
