ABOUT WEATHER SYSTEMS ...WEATHER SYSTEMS from progarchives.com Weather Systems biography When Anathema announced an indefinite hiatus on 22nd September 2020, due in part to the financial burdens of a lengthy career that had failed somewhat to live up to expectations in commercial terms, it was a crying shame, but also totally understandable. It always seemed likely, however, that the two remaining founding brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh would eventually make new music again, and 2024 has seen them both emerge from their semi-retirement with new projects. Vincent's new art-rock project 'The Radicant' released a debut 5-track EP called 'We Ascend' earlier this year, but the debut album by Daniel Cavanagh's 'Weather Systems' (also the name of one of his former band's most acclaimed albums), called 'Ocean Without A Shore' is probably the closest thing that Anathema fans will get to a continuation of that band's at least temporarily halted career. The album is made up of new versions of songs that were originally intended to form the next Anathema album anyway, since in 2019 Daniel began writing what he thought would become the basis of the next Anathema offering, and to finally bring the album to fruition, he teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Daniel Cardoso, who played drums on the two most recent Anathema albums 'Distant Satellites' and 'The Optimist'. The 'Ocean Without A Shore' album was released on September 27th via Music Theories Recordings (part of the Mascot Label Group). While Vincent's 'The Radicant' project leans more towards the experimental and abstract side of prog, Danny has chosen to continue focusing primarily on the sound that Anathema migrated towards during its later years, whilst at times also paying tribute to the past. He takes care of vocals, keys, piano, guitars, bass, vocoder and programming, whilst Daniel Cardoso looks after drums and production. The album also features the guest vocalists Soraia Silva, Petter Carlsen, Oliwia Krettek, and Paul Kearns. 'Ocean Without a Shore' can therefore be looked upon as a somewhat of a spiritual successor to Anathema's more modern sound, along with some hints here and there back to Danny Cavanagh's 2017 solo album titled 'Monochrome'. The music could be described as orchestrated rock, laced with electronica, progressive elements, vocal harmonies and celestial atmospheres. ABOUT ICE ...ICE from progarchives.com Ice biography ICE was formed after the premature demise of the progressive rockgroup MARYSON. The latter band released two albums ('97 and "98) through WMMS, a German record company. The music was based upon the series of fantasy novels by author W.J.Maryson, aka Wim Stolk, who also composed and played keyboards. After he left the band in 2000 the remaining members reformed as ICE and started writing new material. Since there was a general preference to compose music on a fixed theme the new songs were written, using the original story entitled Ice (hence the name chosen for the band) by René Sterk. Besides the CD, a musical, performed by a cast of young students and live music by ICE was completed in the fall of 2005. Thus the new ICE concept was born. The musicians: Ardie Westdijk, keyboards. Ardie, a longtime active player in the progressive rock scene was a founding member of DIFFERENCES and released two albums with this band. He started collaboration with the other ICE members as a hired keyboardplayer for Maryson and eased into the number one spot in 2000. He is responsible for most of the ICE material and beeing a graphic designer by trade, all the credits for the artwork for the CD are his. Chris van Hoogdalem, guitars and vocals. Chris started his musical journey as a guitarplayer in rockbands. He went on to record with bands like ALPHA and CIRKEL. He played studio dates for quite some time, gaining experience playing different musical styles. Chris wrote a couple of tracks for the album. Hein van den Broek, vocals and guitars. Hein started out as the leadsinger for ARGYLL. He was also involved in several musical projects, for some time his favorite niche in the rock world, one of those beeing "Let's stick together", performing several shows with high profile musicians. Hein currently also performs with his band ORIENTAL GUITARS, playing dates in Holland as well as the United Kingdom. On stage, Hein shares the guitarslot with Chris, playing both acoustic and electric guitars. He also contributes in the writing department. Hennie van Mourik, bass guitars and vocals. Hennie has many years of musical experience, playing and singing in progressive rockbands like CIRKEL and KEY LARGO. Fitting his modest persona, Hennie operates from the background but his playing is of great influence on the overall sound of the band, beeing responsible for many of the complimentary melodies played on either fretted or fretless bass. Rob Boshuijzen, drums. Rob is an experienced drummer and playes drumclinics on a regular base. He also is in high demand as a sessiondrummer, playing mainly live gigs, making him up to scratch on a wide variety of musical directions. His unique style makes Rob a sound defining member in ICE. Unadmittedly, the band sometimes has to work very hard to keep up with his high octane approach to the fine art of playing drums. René Sterk. Alltough not a regular bandmember, René is responsible for the story behind the record. Together with Hein, René wrote all the lyrics. Having a longtime musical background as a musician and producer, he is the "extra pair of ears" for ICE in the studio. René contributed in a big way in putting the album together and recording and producing of the CD. All music is arranged, using everybody's input with respect for every opinion and suggestion. Working this way is concidered very pleasant by everyone, and most importantly, helps the tight fit sound of the band.
