ABOUT

HOOFFOOT

...HOOFFOOT
From Progarchives.com

Hooffoot biography
Founded in Malmö, Sweden in 2009

How long is your attention span? Do you prefer McDonalds over slow food? Do you even have the time to read this? Not all music consumers want instant 3 minute satisfaction from a sexy sing‐a‐long chorus on Spotify. Luckily, there are musicians out there who can deliver both foreplay and climax during an elongated intimate musical meeting. Meet HOOFFOOT, an all instrumental jazz/rock band, from Malmö Sweden.

Strange things may happen when a SLAYER fan forms his own jazz group. Late in life band leader and bass player Pär HALLGREN discovered 70´s jazz and Italian Progressive Rock.

HOOFFOOT was formed in 2009 but the band wasn´t planned to be what it is today. From the start it was a Sunday forum for three men to meet, try weird musical ideas, drink coffee and complain about back ache. The band carefully expanded step by step inviting musicians of various musical background. It took three years to reach six permanent members. Live performances are flavored with guest musicians (saxophone, trumpet, violin).

Pär HALLGREN, bass, THE CARPET KNIGHTS, DEATHENING, SGT SUNSHINE, ØRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE

Joakim JÖNSSON, guitar, THE CARPET KNIGHTS, BLAND BLADEN, ØRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE

Jacob HAMILTON, drums

Bengt WAHLGREN, keyboards, SIBIRIEN

Ola ERIKSON, keyboards, SIBIRIEN, BLAND BLADEN, ØRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE, DERANGO

Mikael ÖDESJÖ, guitar, AGUSA

First live appearances were long jams at psychedelic multi‐art events and happenings. Live appearances with shorter sets followed e.g. as opening act for Swedish cult fusion group FLÄSKET BRINNER. The band wanted to continue to present a wide spectrum of sounds and moods also during these more restrained circumstances. Therefore the band started to put more effort into arrangements. The focus was now on musical storytelling and small melodic themes soon grew to 15‐30 minute arrangements. The material worked really well live but how could this energy be transferred to a recording? It is a question of both technology and psychology.

There was an unsuccessful attempt in a studio in Copenhagen during 2013 where both the above failed. In 2014 the band met award winning producer Christoffer LUNDQUIST. He is well known for his commercial success with mainstream artists but less known for his knowledge of analog recording and his personal love for symphonic compositions2. Christoffer and the band connected in a fantastic way. He used psychology to push the band to the edge of performance, and willingly over the edge. He used old school state of the art analog technology to create a warm and detailed sound.

The resulting self‐titled debut album was released on Feb 23rd 2015. Swedish National Radio has played the massive opening track in its entirety. Speaking of attention span, when was the last time national radio played uninterrupted instrumental jazzrock for nearly 20 minutes?

During the summer of 2015 HOOFFOOT has been booked to play festivals in Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

Sounds and philosophy

Over the years the band has grown and transformed from a vision and into a self‐sustainable organism. The musicians all have different musical background. Keyboard player Ola is a wellrespected composer of electronic music, often appearing on festival stages all over Europe, while basist Pär has released 5 albums in genres of Death Metal / Progressive Rock / Blues Rock. Jocke has been touring Europe with a group that has released some 15 albums and played over 100 shows with 100% improvised space rock. In the analogy of Frankenstein it is obvious that the unique blend of people in Hooffoot has built a monster. HOOFFOOT wasn't planned to be what it is. HOOFFOOT has just developed a mind of it?s own. It started as a strange but easy to control little three‐piece. Now it has grown into something bigger than sum of its parts. Now, it is an independent lifeform on the loose.

The music may be difficult by some standards but it is certainly not difficult to listen to HOOFFOOT. Other heavy sounding rock bands wanting to challenge their musical capabilities often tend to end up with stiff and metallic compositions. Innovative rhythmic patterns need to be smooth and groovy. After a HOOFFOOT concert a voice from the audience once commented: ?It swings but I don´t know how!?

HOOFFOOT does not necessarily want to impress the intellect of the listener. HOOFFOOT wants to bring the listener on‐board for a journey through seas of sound carrying the listener from pleasant harbors of melody and into the unholy waters of mad improvisation.

For the old music lover, tired of the tidy sounds of modern recordings, HOOFFOOT is a breeze from past times when jazz used to be evil and when live musicians didn´t play it safe. For the rocker, HOOFFOOT is an ear opener, showing that Miles DAVIS lives right next door to BLACK SABBATH. However, the objective is not to recreate the music or the sounds of the 70?s. Hooffoot is firmly of the opinion that the spirit of the 70?s can only be properly honored by embracing the attitude that there are no rules.

Only conform to non‐conformity!

SANTANA loved MILES. MAGMA loved COLTRANE. SOFT MACHINE loved pop (OK, perhaps only for a while). PINK FLOYD loved SOFT MACHINE. WEATHER REPORT loved African grooves. The Italian progressive bands loved classical music. RETURN TO FOREVER loved Brazilian stuff. Frank ZAPPA loved BLACK SABBATH, and BLACK SABBATH loved to smash people?s preconceptions. Hooffoot love them all. Forget about labels like ?rock?, ?jazz?, ?progressive? and ?kraut?. Who cares? Rejoice in the spirit of the 70?s. HOOFFOOT ? paura di niente!

I listened to Philipp Nespital for the first time in 2017 with his album THE OCEAN and this multi-instrumentalist had caught my attention and I decided to follow his subsequent albums which would certainly give me some excellent music.... after many years Philipp Nespital comes out with this new album and proves once again that he can write music of various genres while always maintaining an excellent quality.

ABOUT

HEAD SPIN

...HEAD SPIN
From Progarchives.com

Nottingham, UK-based musician Andy SCOFFIN writes, performs, programs, and produces his instrumental psychedelic/space rock project HEAD SPIN, which he formed in 2020.

The left-handed guitarist began playing at age 13, inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Steve Hillage, Andy Garcia, and Frank Zappa, among others. Over the next 10 years, he played in several short-lived bands before joining the Grateful Dead tribute band the Grateful Dudes in 2015, where he remains to this day. HEAD SPIN's debut EP, "Digitalis," in 2021, was followed by the single "Wax Donor" and the LP "Escape Velocity" the following year. A single featuring a reworked version of "Moai," a track from the debut EP, was released in 2023.
The album REFRACTOR was released in 2024, and HIGH ORBIT in 2025.
The music shows clear affinities with Ozric Tentacles and Ed Wynne's solo material, as well as with You-era Gong and Steve Hillage's solo work.

ABOUT

MYTH OF LOGIC

...MYTH OF LOGIC
From Progarchives.com

Myth of Logic biography
MYTH OF LOGIC is the creative vehicle of Scott G. DAVIS of Saint Petersburg, FL, and is influenced to some extent by progressive rock of all eras, but primarily that of the 1970s, the main influences being stated to include GENESIS, EMERSON LAKE & PALMER, RUSH, KANSAS, YES and SAGA.

Back in the early 1990s Scott had a vision of the band he had always wanted, but nothing came of it at the time, so he lived his life, stored his ideas and generally ignored this music. Then in 2021, after much gentle prodding from a friend named Jim BEILMAN, something ignited and the mothballed music and ideas just came pouring back out. Scott had no idea of the cause or the source of this sudden inspiration.

The debut album 'Surrounded By Ghosts' is thus the first chapter of an intended trilogy called 'Here & There', and was written and recorded in Saint Petersburg, FL at Boyz Club South Studio and mastered by Alan DOUCHES at West West Side Music. The album follows the story of a guy called Robin, and is one of adventure, discovery and redemption - featuring a man trapped and fighting for his life who must find a way to defeat a seemingly invincible foe and escape from his prison. It was released on CD and all major streaming platforms via Abulia Records on 11th November 2022.

The second chapter in the trilogy, 'Pictures From A Previous Dream' was soon to follow, being released just over a year later on 31st December 2023, again via Abulia Records, and following the story of Robin as his adventure continues. The third chapter in the story is also currently at the beginning of 2024 already half written.

ABOUT

RHYS MARSH & MANDALA

...RHYS MARSH & MANDALA
From official website

Rhys Marsh is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & record producer. He has released 11 albums over the past 15 years — as a solo artist, and with his bands The Autumn Ghost, Mandala & Kaukasus.

— Solo —

In the autumn of 2013, after releasing four albums with The Autumn Ghost, Marsh put out his first solo release — a five-song collection of covers, called ‘Suspended In A Weightless Wind’. Songs covered included Nick Drake’s ‘Things Behind The Sun’ & King Crimson’s ‘Moonchild’.

Marsh’s debut solo album, ‘Sentiment’, was released in November, 2014. It was written & recorded over a two-year period in Marsh’s own Autumnsongs Recording Studio. A dark, yet accessible album, it was met with critical acclaim.

On the 1st of December, 2015, Marsh released his second solo album, ‘The Black Sun Shining’ — an album written & recorded in only seven days, with songs that were mostly built around rhythmic loops.

‘October After All’, Marsh’s third album, was released by Karisma Records on 22.02.19, and featured appearances from Arve Henriksen, Kåre Kolve & Tim Bowness. A beautiful album, full of lush synthesizers and choirs. While the vinyl release features 10 songs, the full album actually contains 22 songs.

Marsh’s fourth album, ‘Towards The West’, — an acoustic-based album, centred around the loss of his Dad — was released on the 1st September, 2023.

https://www.facebook.com/RhysMarshMusic

— Mandala —

Marsh’s first band, formed in London, in 1997. In 2014, after a seven-year break, Mandala got back together to record their debut album, ‘Midnight Twilight’. Released in 2015, the album reached number 3 in the iTunes UK rock charts.

They met again in the summer of 2018, to record a brand new album, ‘The Echoes Of Your Mind’, which was released on Friday the 13th November, 2020.

They’re currently recording their third album.

https://www.facebook.com/withinMandala

— Rhys Marsh And The Autumn Ghost —

‘Multi-national orchestra’, The Autumn Ghost, features members of Jaga Jazzist, Anekdoten, Enslaved, The National Bank, Wobbler, Änglagård, Highasakite, Emmerhoff & The Melancholy Babies, Flashback Caruso & The Divine Comedy.

Their debut album, ‘The Fragile State Of Inbetween’, was released in the autumn of 2008, to critical acclaim.

In the autumn of 2009, they released the follow-up, the first on Termo Records, ‘Dulcima’. Hot on the heels of the debut, the first pressing of ‘Dulcima’ sold out before it was even released.

The long-awaited third Autumn Ghost album, ‘The Blue Hour’, was released in the autumn of 2012, and featured woodwind & brass quartets, plus a rhythm section borrowed from Jaga Jazzist & Enslaved.

To support the release of ‘The Blue Hour’, Marsh formed a trio, with drums & electric piano complimenting his guitar & vocal. In the spring of 2013, they released ‘Trio’, the ensemble’s first release on Autumnsongs Records — an album recorded live in the studio, over the course of just two days, which successfully captured the fiery energy the band had become known for onstage.

— Kaukasus —

The spring of 2014 saw the release of the debut Kaukasus album, ‘I’. Kaukasus is a collaboration between Ketil Vestrum Einarsen, Rhys Marsh & Mattias Olsson. Written & recorded in two weeks, the album is an instinctive sum of its parts.

They released a new single in 2020, ‘To Give’, with plans to write & record a follow-up album at some point.

https://www.facebook.com/KaukasusBand

— Other projects —

Marsh is also a part of Unit, a collaboration with Takashi Mori & Ingrid Chavez. They have so far released one EP, ‘Falls From View’.

As well as this, Marsh has also contributed to albums by The Opium Cartel, Peter Broderick, Trouble Over Tokyo, When Mary, Silje Leirvik & Tim Bowness.

ABOUT

DAAL

...DAAL
From progarchives.com

Daal biography
Formed in Bergamo, Italy, in 2008

DAAL is an Italian duet. It's a project by Davide GUIDONI and Alfio COSTA. They're both experienced musicians on Italian Prog rock scene - Guidoni is a drummer who had been working with Taproban, The Far Side, Gallant Farm, Nuova Era, Ozone Player and others. Costa (Tilion, Prowlers, Colossus project, Dark Session) plays keyboards - mostly vintage ones, as well as some softsynths.

It's not surprising their music is rich in lush textures, with emphasis on a multitude of layers; a heritage of Italian Progressive Rock movement is evident, as well as various other influences. A curiosity is their nod to a Swedish progressive rock scene.

ABOUT

JONAS LINDBERG & THE OTHER SIDE

...JONAS LINDBERG & THE OTHER SIDE
From official website

About

Jonas Lindberg & The Other Side is a Progressive rock project from Stockholm, Sweden founded in 2012 by bassplayer, songwriter and producer Jonas Lindberg.

It all started back in 2008 when the EP "IN SECRET PACE" was recorded by Jonas as an exam-project at the college of Music in Piteå, Sweden. The first recordings featured a large lineup of musicians and was originally intended to work as a demo for an upcoming band. But as term ended Jonas moved to Stockholm to pursue a career as a freelance musician and the idea got put on hold. In 2012 "IN SECRET PACE" was finally released on digital platforms as Jonas started to work on new material.

This time the lineup featured a 5 piece band and the second EP "THE OTHER SIDE" was finished and released in 2013. The project was named "JONAS LINDBERG & THE OTHER SIDE" from the title track of the album after its release. Playing on the album is Jonas LINDBERG on bass, backing vocals, keyboards and guitars together with Jonas SUNDQVIST (lead vocals), Jonathan LUNDBERG (drums), Calle STÅLENBRING (guitars) and Michael OTTOSSON (keyboards). Two more musicians, Nicklas THELIN (guitar) and Jenny SANDGREN (vocal) later joined for the live shows.

Following the enthusiastic reception of the 2016 album "PATHFINDER", Jonas began working on another full length album in 2019. The album - called "MILES FROM NOWHERE" - is more of a solo effort than the previous album with Jonas playing most of the instruments himself, and also features a few more guest musicians. Returning on a few tracks is Simon WILHELMSSON (drums) who some may remember from the first EP, as well as Jonas's brother Joel on lead guitar. Missing is Michael OTTOSSON who sadly passed away in 2020, leading up to Jonas taking on full keyboard duties.
