Show 140 - Headshear, Flor De Loto, The Gourishankar

Airing Sunday, July 29 from 8-11 PM EST & Monday, July 30 from 1-4 PM EST.

This week is a milestone, show 140. Usually milestones are round numbers like 100, but let's give 140 some love!

No frills, just three full CD's, all fairly recent. Something for everyone....and pack for a long trip, we'll be covering a lot of miles...

Headshear - Headshear (2006)

The Walking Tapestry
Chunky Navy Part I
Phivunk
Complex Nothing
Mechanically Separated Chicken
Urban Conversation
Viscous
Chunky Navy Part II
The Bitter Cold

As you can tell these are instrumentals.....comparatively speaking similar to Discipline-era Crimson. I also hear a bit of the intricacies of the Maryland-based acoustical band Might Could. You'll also hear some Percy Jones style bass from Van Spragins. It's on the Moon, a very solid debut. "Viscous" clocks in at a healthy 13 minutes. Hailing from San Francisco, check out their myspace sometime.

A tip of the cap (if I wore one) to Nadina, who pointed me in the right direction! I've been told she's travelled far and wide to see them.

Flor De Loto - Madre Tierra (2007)

Madre Tierra
El Charango Perdido
El Mensajero
Danza Celta
Luz de Luna
Andaluces
Antares
Despareciendo
La Ley de la Vida
Medusa

Gettin' all Progressive Shores on your hiney with some Peruvian prog. Actually, more rock and roll or
more descriptively, 70's era prog. Aggressive, with twin flute and guitar leads in most of the songs. The flute is used as a lead instrument, but not really sounding like Tull or Focus... they have a distinct style. This one rocks, and will be on the Moon soon. Their debut from 2005 has been on the Moon.

The Gourishankar - 2nd Hands (2007)

Moon 7
Endless Drama
Querr Forest
Taste A Cake
The Inexpressible Chagrin
Syx
...end
Marvelous Choice

I smell top CD candidate of 2007! Very intricate arrangements with some killer guitar runs ala Goodsall and driven by some excellent keyboards. And a fine group of guys too, hailing from Russia...with Prog

This was touted heavily by a close friend, and I picked up an EP from five years back in the bargain bin at Nearfest. It was a CD for review by Progression magazine that they decided to resell (not sure if I would have done that). It was interesting...we'll hear two of the longer cuts from the EP next week (seems like an oxymoron).

"Moon 7" and "Syx" are over 10 minutes, and "Choice" is 18 minutes of great music.

Don't miss it!

The Gourishankar - 2nd Hands (2007) - that surprised me a lot since it's so good - on of the 2007 great CDs. Love to see them live so we can hope a Fest gets them over sometime. Don't know the others so I'll lend you an ear on Monday......
