Uriah Heep

Add to the moon? I've just ripped my "Magician's Birthday" vinyl onto CD, and was thinking of adding most of it to the moon - any opinions?

Guess what cd I just happed to be including in the package I am sending next, along with Demons & Wizards.

So you can compare quality and consider this a big YES! I would say their omission is one that needs to be rectified.

Today is only Yesterday's Tomorrow....

Uriah Heep, Budgie, Manfred Mann....all basically covering the same ground. Budgie's a bit more heavy but no less pleasing. Manfred's on the Moon...

It's always a tough call with the early 70's groups about what fits on the Moon, and there will be diverging thoughts. My opinion is that if you like it and think it fits, add it...with the large library here, it won't stick out.

Re: Uriah Heep

I like Uriah Heep, and I have both The Demons and Wizards and Magicians Birthday on vinyl, and still to this day continue to enjoy them very much. So If you think they belong on the moon Jim, and have to very much agree with you. The first Uriah Heep Album is great also....

Re: Uriah Heep

I once was in a conversation with a guy about music. I told him I liked jazz and classical, good straight rock, smart pop-rock, lots of good Christian bands (many of which are more creative and original than their secular counterparts, though the only bits most people here are the derivative ones), and even a little folk, but my favorite is progressive rock. His immediate response?

"So, all Uriah Heep marathon tonight?"

I don't know if that's an aye vote or not, but thought I'd share the story.

Personally, I'm not overly familiar with them, but what I've heard seems proggy enough. I mean, I like a broad definition of prog, so I don't seem them as any less proggy than Supertramp, whom I always thought of as "an interesting pop rock band."

And as per RNR's comments above, my favorite indie record stores, The Magic Platter and Slip Disc - may they RIP - both had Budgie and Heep in the prog section.

While we're on the subject of "obvious" bands not on AM, is there a reason no Asia is here, or is it just something that slipped through the cracks? I don't really care one way or the other. Just curious.

Yes to Uriah Heep. Demons and Wizards is one of my all time favorites.
Yes to Golden Earring. Moontan, Switch, To The Hilt are superb albums

Budgie was an awesome band but definetly not prog

Re: Uriah Heep

AM has Tales from ''Magician's Birthay'' on their playlist. At least the door is open!!!
As for Asia, they should have a few songs at least.Their last couple of albums had many proggy moments,so did their classic albums.
Golden Earring is a vastly underrated group within the prog community. Most of what they recorded between 1968 and 1977 is PROG!

Re: Uriah Heep

Golden Earring:

There's that four disc set called Supernatural Tales: The Progressive Rock Era" or somesuch, and I looked over the tracklist and saw "Radar Love" and my reaction was "What!?!"

I can't hear that song or "Twilight Zone" as prog, although I think they're a cut above standard classic rock radio. I've always loved the song "Vanilla Queen."

Re: Uriah Heep

A copy of Uriah Heep's Magician's Birthday and Demons & Wizzards is now on the way to ProgDirJim so we shall soon have both.

I'm afraid I'd have to be in the group that considers Golden Earring Rock, not Prog Rock. But I really like the group, don't get me wrong. But if you wanted to choose their closest tunes to prog, I wouldn't be offended either.
